TR volunteers are now in Sri Lanka, and have been working closely with the community in the Matara District of the Southern Province, one of the areas most severely affected by recent flooding and landslides. One strike team has focussed on rebuilding a bridge destroyed by flooding resulting in a community losing access to school and work. Another team has been rebuilding a home which had been completely destroyed by flooding leaving the occupants vulnerable. Our volunteers are furthermore assessing water, sanitation and hygiene across the region to address the substantial risk of water contamination, dengue and diarrhoea resulting from the flooding. See a full field report.
A second group of volunteers has departed for Uganda to begin work on Operation Mutima, working alongside Feed the Hungry UK to build secure, permanent kitchen facilities to feed thousands of schoolchildren in the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, home to Kenyan and South Sudanese refugees.
Planning is in progress for further operations in the Philippines, Haiti, Nepal and South Sudan.
