Sitrep 30/05/17 – Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and planned operations

Sri Lanka: An estimated 558,000 people are understood to have been affected by flooding and mudslides caused by monsoon rains. TR Operations is in contact with the Sri Lanka authorities to assess how we might be able to assist and we have a recce team on standby.

Bangladesh: Cyclone Mora has made landfall in Bangladesh bringing heavy rain and winds with the risk of flooding and storm surges. 300,000 people have been evacuated from coastal areas. We have reached out to their Ministry of Defence through our partnership with the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League and are awaiting a response.

Uganda: A team of Greyshirts is deploying to Uganda on 16 June to work alongside Feed the Hungry UK in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, northern Uganda. Our volunteers will be supporting the construction of secure, permanent kitchen facilities to feed schoolchildren. Find out more about this project and donate to support our deployment to Uganda.

Philippines: A recce team has deployed to the Philippines to support a multi-agency project involving reconstruction and capacity building in a deprived area of Mandaue City. Main body deployment will be on 15 August returning on 1 September.

Haiti: Planning a recce to assess the scope for continuing recovery work in the wake of our Hurricane Matthew deployment in October-November 2016.

Nepal: Two operations are pending in Nepal: the first involves restoring hydro power and continuing reconstruction in Lapubesi and is dependant upon road construction work. The second involves capacity building in West Nepal working alongside Brigade of Gurkhas and Serve On. Deployment window is 15 September – 7 October and we will be advertising for volunteers very soon for both operations.

South Sudan: A recce is due later this year to assess needs in this project supporting the delivery of combat surgical training delivered by the David Nott Foundation.
