On August 12, 2016, a significant long-term weather event developed in Gulf States and particularly inSouthern Louisiana. During the continuing days many communities received significant rainfall of over 20 inches, and local emergencies developed into flash flooding events and significant river flooding events impacting one thousand year floodplain areas. The Governorof Louisiana declared a State of Emergency as over 20 parishes were affected and weather forecast indicated that the rains wouldcontinue for several days resulting in an incredibly dangerous initial rescue phase which lasted over four days and resulted in over 20,000 active helicopter and ground based water rescues. Roughly 10,000 structures throughout southeastern Louisiana stand affected and the event has been attributed to over a dozen confirmed fatalities.
Team Rubicon’s task force was to provide damage assessment, muck outs, debris removal, and volunteer management to affected communities.
