Tropical Cyclone IDAI formed over the Northern Mozambique Channel on 9 March, moving south-east with a wind speed of 89 – 118 km/h. IDAI made landfall on 14 March at 23.30 UTC close to Beira City, Sofala Province, Central Mozambique as a Category 3 cyclone with winds of 170-190 km/h. The cyclone brought torrential rains and winds, exacerbating existing flooding following heavy rains from 6 March 2019. OCHA estimates that 1.8 million are likely to have been affected by the cyclone, including 446 deaths.
Team Rubicon are providing safe water through purification to the most remote, hard to reach survivors – these people will have received no aid in the last 2 weeks, and would receive nothing if Team Rubicon were not deploying.
Each water purification kit we deploy can provide safe, purified water to 2,250 beneficiaries for 4 weeks and 240 beneficiaries for 1 year- a total of 2490 beneficiaries per kit. The 6 x kits currently being deployed with our team will benefit 4,940 survivors.
