The Need

On Sunday 9th June 2019 heavy rains started falling in Lincolnshire which continued for a number of days. On Wednesday 12th June a culvert on the River Steep collapsed in the town of Wainfleet causing extensive flooding. Three streets in particular were adversely affected by flooding and 70 residents evacuated. Over the next 2 days the environment agency and RAF attempted to plug the breach byairlifting approximately 270 tonnes of ballast. This was initially completed during the evening of Friday 14th June however by the morning the plug had started to deteriorate causing major concerns. As a result, this added further pressure to additional sections of the river bank with further cracks identified with concern for a further breach of the river bank in the town centre along with the deterioration of the original plug.

The Response

TR Greyshirts, whilst waiting for the flood waters to lower, have been conducting low level tasks including becoming an integral part of the volunteer reception centre. A larger scale response is currently being planned once access is available.
