The Need

On the morning of Tuesday 4 October, Hurricane Matthew made landfall in the Grand Anse and Southern Peninsula as a Category 4 hurricane, with heavy rain, strong winds and flood-ing. Mathew is the third strongest hurricane ever recorded in Haiti and the first Category 4 to hit the country in the past 52 years. Winds up to 150 mph (240km/h) barreled into southern coastal towns including Jeremie, Les Cayes, Port Salut, Damie Marie and Jacmel causing major damage to tin-roof homes, schools and other public buildings. Between 20 and 40 inches of rain were recorded across the southern Peninsula, which combined with important storm surge, caused major flooding across the entire region.

The Response

Team Rubicon provided resources and skills to aid the recovery process in the form of: debris management/road clearance, repairs, water and sanitation where possible, plus further needs assessments to remote communities which remained unassisted.
